A boardwalk trail allows visitors to walk above the swamp floor and among the trees in Congaree National Park, near Columbia, South Carolina on Earth Day, April 20, 2008. Protected in 1976 by the US Congress as Congaree Swamp National Monument, the 22,000 acre park became Congaree National Park in 2003. The park is home to primeval forest landscape, champion trees including record bald cypress, tupelo and loblolly pine trees.
